Tension headaches are the most common, affecting about 1.6 billion people (21.8% of the population) followed by migraine headaches which affect about 848 million (11.7%). Headaches can occur as a result of many conditions. Causes of headache includes fatigue, sleep deprivation, dehydration, stress, viral infections, loud noise, head injury, common cold, sinusitis and dental issues.
Headaches can be primary which usually starts at 20 years of age and includes migraines, cluster headaches, trigeminal neuralgia, cough headache, etc. Or it can be secondary where it is caused by conditions like meningitis, intracranial haemorrhage, subarachnoid haemorrhage, brain tumour, temporal arteritis, acute closed angle glaucoma, etc. Some gastrointestinal disorders also cause headaches, like H. Pylori infection, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, celiac disease, etc.
