Description

Measles is an infectious disease caused by the measles virus (Measles morbillivirus). It is also known as morbili, rubeola, red measles, and English measles. It is an air borne disease and spreads very easily from one person to another through the cough and sneezes and through direct contact with mouth and nasal discharge.

Symptoms begin in about 10-14 days after exposure to the virus. Measles presents clinically with the classic symptoms of a 4-day fever (4 D’s) and the 3 C’s – cough, coryza and conjunctivitis; with a maculopapular rash. Fever lasts for a week and is as High as 104 degree F. The characteristic Koplik’s spots are seen inside the mouth and are diagnostic of this condition. Common complications include diarrhoea, middle ear infections and pneumonia.
