Description

Cough is a protective reflex characterized by sudden expulsion of air from breathing passage. Acute cough lasts not more than 2-3 weeks beginning suddenly. It occurs due to infections like common cold, pneumonia, acute bronchitis, tuberculosis, COVID-19 etc. But mostly acute coughs are due to the common cold. Other causes include reflux disease, air pollution, airway clearance etc. Acute cough can be dry or productive (presence of phlegm/sputum). Cold is an infectious disease of the upper respiratory tract where it inflames the mucous membranes. It is an acute, self-limiting disease most often caused by rhinoviruses and coronaviruses. Symptoms are nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, sneezing, sore throat, fatigue and cough.

Catarrh is a condition when there is accumulation of mucus in the nose, throat or sinuses due to the inflammation of the mucous membrane. Causes may be acute – allergic rhinitis, common cold, or chronic – atrophic rhinitis, sinusitis, Deviated Nasal Septum. Symptoms are sneezing, stuffy feeling in nose, thin nasal discharge with posterior nasal drip, dry cough, headache and pain in face.
