Description

Fever is a complex physiologic response to disease mediated by pyrogenic cytokines and characterized by a rise in core temperature, generation of acute phase reactants and activation of immune systems. An elevated body temperature (fever) is one of the ways our immune system attempts to combat an infection. Usually the rise in body temperature helps the individual resolve an infection. However, sometimes it may rise too high, in which case the fever can be serious and lead to complications.

A child has fever when the temperature is at or above one of these levels :

• 100.4°F (38°C) measured in the bottom (rectally)
• 99.5°F (37.5°C) measured in the mouth (orally)
• 99°F (37.2°C) measured under the arm (axillary)

A fever can cause one to feel very uncomfortable. Associated Signs and symptoms of a fever besides high temperature include the following –

• Shivering, shaking, chills
• Aching muscles and joints
• Headache
• Intermittent sweats
• Rapid heart rate or palpitations
• Skin flushing Feeling faint, dizzy or lightheaded
• Weakness
