It is empirically used as an anti-inflammatory and expectorant. It was known to the ancients of third century B.C. for its efficacy in the case of dry coughs. The Greeks used it for the treatment of gastric and peptic ulcers. Arab physicians used it to relieve coughs and for the side effects of laxatives.
The root is alterative, antispasmodic, demulcent, diuretic, emollient, expectorant, laxative, moderately pectoral and a tonic. It is much used in cough medicines and also in the treatment of catarrhal infections of the urinary tract. It is useful in irritating coughs, sore throat, colds and Bronchitis. It also helps in Asthma and prevents recurrent respiratory infections. It is known to inhibit the growth of Prostate, helps in reduction of body fat, and is helpful in treatment of hormone imbalances and menopausal symptoms in women.
