The word “Alopecia” comes from the Greek word “alopex” for “fox”. Its use is in its relevance that Foxes are less furry when afflicted with a Skin disease (the “mange”) which causes them to loose their hair. Hair loss (Alopecia) is a disorder in which hair falls out from Skin areas where it is usually present, such as the scalp and body. This loss interferes with the many useful biologic functions of the hair, including Sun protection (mainly to the scalp) and dispersion of sweat gland products.
A number of factors are involved in hair disorders. Genetic factors, Diet, Endocrine abnormalities, Systemic illness, Drug intake, and Hair shaft abnormalities may result in Hair loss. Most Alopecia are due to Hair cycle changes.
