Snoring refers to a rattling, snorting or grumbling sound that certain individuals make while asleep. While infrequent or mild snoring typically doesn’t raise alarms, loud, persistent snoring can increase your risk of certain health conditions like high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack.
When a person dozes off and progresses from a light sleep to a deep sleep, the muscles in the soft palate, tongue, and throat tend to relax. The tissues in the throat can relax enough that they partially block your airway and vibrate. The narrower your airway, the more vigorous the airflow becomes. This increases vibration and causes your snoring to become louder.
